And Meanwhile, Driving Down To Kentucky…

This was about 2 pm, Saturday, driving down, what I assume to be, I57, near the town of Mattoon. The kids are on their way to grandma’s with their dad. No one confirmed location for me, but the fastest way south is 57 from here. My daughter took this picture while it was happening. It’s a really good picture. Especially from a moving vehicle. She said it was only a funnel cloud when they saw it and she got a picture of it going back up. But I like this one. Very impressive. Then it hailed and rained so hard they couldn’t see and then it cleared. She texted, word for word, “It’s done now. Clear as a bell perfect now!” She sent a picture of the blind windshield but it’s just a grey square that kind of looks like smeary, foggy rain. This is the next picture she sent:

IMG_9060

The girl takes good pictures. I almost feel bad that while the kids are driving through weather and tornadoes, me and the BF are at the liquor store buying all kinds of alcohol for the BBQ we are going to later, and then something for the rest of the weekend. Without children. Eh. Life. I took equally stunning pictures of the new wines I just bought to try out, and then later, post and share my opinions with you, good people. Let me end this with the last two pictures she sent me, because they are also really good, and she knows that I LOVE pictures of the sky and clouds. And you probably, secretly, like them too or you wouldn’t have kept reading!  It’s OK. I thank you! Thank you thank you every day! It’s a peculiar world, this blogging, internet place; big and diverse, the way I like most things, but still managing to feel close and intimate, like we are all sharing this life through our words and images, the way we are taught that we could, if we lived in an ideal world. Hmm. Not one drop to drink yet, I swear it. Anyway, the sky…I’ll take the pics (or my daughter will), and you can look and move on. No one ever has to know. But we’ll know. Here is the first, with her comment, also word for word, “Look at that fat ass cloud.”:

IMG959061

And the last, below, is just one of the sky. I assume it’s off to the side. It’s very pretty for some reason. Good color/contrast and lighting I think. If I don’t get back here tonight, be careful all. Weather or not, Saturday in the summer can be tricky. Stay safe. Later.

Quick Switch Mushroom Pic With Tree Trunk On The Side

June 28, 2013 at 12:19 am (Day to Day, Heat, Mushrooms, Nature, Posts In Pictures, Summer, Summer Break, The Grass, Tree Trouble, Weather) (, , , , , , , , , , , , , )

I got down and dirty to get this pic for you. And now I have about 100 more all sprouting up in various parts of the grass. I guess it’s the new, fresh sod, baking under the extreme, sudden heat, showered by bursts of sporadic, torrential downpours and then steaming in the resulting, sweltering humidity, every few hours. The last few days have been severe weather alert central over here in the Midwest/Chicago area. In fact we have another one tonight. I actually have 4 weather advisories on my phone at this moment. More thunderstorms and flash flooding on the way with damaging winds and hail until 3 am now, according to the last alert that I just received twenty seconds ago. Free rain is good. More tree limbs down is bad. However, I was spared these last few times. Well, that’s not true. I did have another branch break off and fall into the yard about one minute after the storm showed up. No. That’s not exactly true either. What actually happened was, that we got the alert at 5:55 pm for 6 pm. At 6 pm the wind started blowing, fast and sudden just like the alert said. Gusts to 70mph is what the alert said. Damaging to trees and roofs. Find shelter in low lying buildings. Blah blah. The sky darkened. The trees swayed ominously. Another fierce wind, a loud crack, BOOM. We were standing in the backyard and watched the tree bend, heard the break, and observed a substantial limb slowly slip from the tree, cartwheel onto the neighbors power line, hang there for one, treacherous, breathless, millisecond, then topple over and onto the neighbors garage roof, where it slid very sloppily off the front, catching the gutter on the way down to the ground, where it landed on the neighbor’s driveway, intact and with a loud thud. The gutter was bent but not broken. As soon as the rain let up enough so that we could see to move, I sent my son out to hoist that limb into our yard and bend the gutter back up straight. And that’s how it ended up where it still currently sits. I am tired, tired, I say, of moving tree limbs all around our backyard. It can sit. This is the limb:

20130624_183547

So naturally, I was complaining, and all geared up to bemoan fate and nature and all that, until I took a little drive out into the world to go get dinner. This is what happened to our neighbors down the street:

Need a better angle?

Yep. They win. I won’t complain any more about my backyard being the resting place for dying and destitute, wayward branches. At least I can pick them up. This was at 8pm. By 11pm, it was gone. All of it. Every stick, every branch, every limb. Right down to the base of the trunk. Gone. The earth was back in place and the ground was flat. No damage to the house either as far as I can tell. All hail the master of tree removal. I don’t know who did it for them but I am beyond impressed. Three hours, and you can’t even tell anything happened that night. And speaking of night, it’s getting late. Again. I need to end this. Despite the title, this was not quick. Or even a switch. Some bad weather, a picture of something that grows out of the ground, eh, whataya gonna do? One day something really post worthy is going to happen, and, I don’t know. I guess I’ll post it. Maybe I’ll write a story. Or a poem. I have them scattered around this site, ya know, very unorganized like. It’s a search thing. But until then, you get this. And this needs to find a way to end this. Like a band-aid. Quick and painless. Later.

The Nature Series. Starting…Now!

June 26, 2013 at 10:03 am (Day to Day, Flowers, The Grass, Weather) (, , , , , , , )

20130624_155324

I’m going for speed and agility. If I don’t say Stevie took the picture, then I did. I will try to post fast and with little comment. I have stuff to do. CPR starts in an hour. The boy is at basketball. The girl is sleeping. It just started raining. I just got another weather alert for flash flooding and gusty winds. Do not drive through standing water. The depth may be too much for your vehicle to drive through safely. Good advice. Good day for the grass and my flowers. Good day to post and do chores. As long as the power stays on. Later.

Floating Rain Logs

June 23, 2013 at 6:18 pm (Day to Day, Employed Posts!, Family, Movies, Summer Break, Video Games, Wasting Time In General, Weather) (, , , , , , , , , , , )

20130612_191104

Two extra days off. Let’s make the best of the free time. All the posts that I want. With all the pictures of nature that I have. Finish that laundry for good. Do all the chores on the list. Drag around the two kids, plus one, that I have for these two days. I inherited my brother’s step-daughter for a few days. And they want to go to the video store and rent The Walking Dead–Season 3. And get pizza.

IMG958333

If available. Otherwise scary movies. I’ve committed some of our night to The Dukes Of Hazzard movie, per my son. So, I will have plenty of time to get that laundry done and all the other stuff too. I wasted my last days playing this damn game:

I revamped my Tiny Village to make it more profitable and visually appealing. And since I’m anal and have OCD, it really took a lot of my time. Oh, and I have fishing day pics too. Less typing, more action. More later.

Just One More Day…

June 21, 2013 at 1:07 pm (Day to Day, Family, Fish, For Mason, For Stevie, Stevie Pics, Summer Break, The Grass, TV Shows, Weather) (, , , , , , , , , , , )

We always want one more day. I wish I could win the lottery. I wish I was independently wealthy. I wish I had a rich uncle who left me a boatload of cash. I wish I was a housewife. Well, maybe not that last one. But we do always want just one more day off from work and life right? To go fishing and have long lunches. Today is Friday. Back to work for me. The BF is on his way home. The kids are now fully entrenched in The Walking Dead. The TV show. The girl just started watching it. The boy has been watching it. But now he’s watching it again with her. She is staying up late and having nightmares, but she won’t stop. She is stomping around the house, yelling at the TV when things are getting tense during an episode, but she won’t stop. My boy has to keep calling her back into the room so she doesn’t miss the next thing that is going to make her mad. She loves Daryll. She hates Rick. She hates Shane. But not really. She just doesn’t like them. But she loves loves loves Daryll. And Glen. And the blonde. It’s complicated. Apparently. I will say this show does inspire strong feelings. At least I know they will be fine when I leave. I think she is only at season 2. Plenty to keep them busy with. I have been up for a few hours and let me tell you, I think I got more done just this morning than I got done in the 2 days I was actually off. Why does it always work that way for me? Too much time and I do nothing. Not enough and I have it almost all done. Grass watered. Flowers revived (hopefully). Laundry nearly finished. That’s the surprising one. House is clean and I need to hop into the shower asap. At least I know that my house will stay clean because the kids probably won’t move now for the next 10 hours.

Alright. Let me wrap this up. I really got to go. I hope it rains just a little. My outdoor stuff needs that good rainwater. First day of summer. Do something fun. Here’s another pic from the fishing hole. FYI. We didn’t catch one darn fish. And, these are Stevie’s photos. All credit goes to her. Later.

Hey. At Least It’s Not A Flower.

June 18, 2013 at 12:17 pm (Day to Day, For Stevie, Mushrooms, Stevie Pics) (, , , , , , , , )

IMG951267

Look at that. Stevie took those picture perfect mushrooms (?) toadstools (?) fungi (!) in the backyard at her grandpa’s house. Nice huh? They look like they should be in the deep woods or something instead of the middle of suburbia. Makes my fungi look so sad. Mine were taken off of the tree that was cut down last year and left to lay on the ground. These grew out of the stump:

IMAG1932

I had some ground mushrooms that I took pictures of after it rained last week, but they are pathetic comparatively and not even worth your viewing time here. Believe me, I didn’t get down on the ground and really get in there, to capture their earthy essence, so they just look like brown spots in the tall grass that kind of-sort of look like mushrooms. You can see a domed cap and that’s about it. I think I am sensing a new feature, or at least a new tag and category. Mushrooms. I’m going to keep it simple. Also, FYI, full photo creds need to be given to Stevie for the picture of the white flowers in the next post. She reminded me, and wanted me to be sure and point out that she is the one who took the picture. NOT me. She took the white flower pic. She took the tall, yellow mushroom pic. I have to go to work. Later.

And Now For The Really Important Postings! All About Stevie!

June 17, 2013 at 12:17 pm (Day to Day, Family, For Stevie, Graduation, Thank You) (, , , , , , , , )

20130615_183550

The party on Saturday was a huge success! Thank you to everyone who came out (and reads this) and represented for the family. The party was at her dad’s house, which is way out South in the cornfields of Illinois. As is illustrated by the graduation girl and the 25 pictures she took of herself in said cornfields. It was a hike for some, so the extra effort was appreciated. The rain held off out there it seems, or it was just like, forget it, we ARE not going that far down 57, because it was torrential as we were driving north at 11:30 that night. It stopped once we got near home, and it’s all good for the sod. The sod. The sod. All we can concentrate on is that grass and keeping it alive everyday. But I digress. Here is the cake:

20130615_142007

And here’s the girl. She doesn’t like this picture, but it is the only one I have of her actually doing a party thing. So I will bury it at the bottom of this cake post. The rest of the pics are all of her in the corn and against the sunset with her cousin. I will give those the next headline post (actually above this one because that’s how they fall unless I backward time them and I’m just not) so she can look at herself if she wants to for the rest of the day when I go to work.

Now Where Was I? Weekly Photo Challenge: Curves. And The Sprinklers.

June 15, 2013 at 9:51 am (Day to Day, Home Improvement, The Grass, Weather) (, , , , , , , )

20130614_180825

Because I just realized that all these pics are curved in some way. But I don’t want to start posting just based on themes. The sprinkler “system” above and just a curvy hose below. I was going to put this up next anyway, but I got distracted with the bigger blog world. The same way I have been distracted already with the blue jay, the little baby rabbit, and the momma rabbit in our yard, the sprinklers, the sod and the tree fauna we have growing out of our gutters. Of course I have pictures. I took 20 pictures of the baby rabbit just sitting on a log. Same position. Same zoom. I can’t stop myself. Anyway. I need to eat. So I am taking a quick break. We went and got the new sprinkler so I think the grass might have a fighting chance now. Plus it’s trying to rain out there. I was wrong. Any plans you made, based on my weather predictions are probably gonna get rained out. And the sod is still viable. Double fail on seeing the future. My daughters grad party is today too, so, like you, I will also be taking shelter in a garage somewhere. But I will be telling my daughter,  “Everything will be fine. Rain is good luck! It’s still a great party!” Later.

Stevie #7 Mosquito Attack!

June 13, 2013 at 12:59 pm (Day to Day, Flowers, For Stevie, Stevie Pics, Summer Break, Weather) (, , , , , , , , , , , , )

IMG958070

The white flower with purple veins. I asked her to go take another picture but with my phone and she said NO.

MOM! You don’t even know how long it took to get that picture! Like, 20 shots and then she was getting attacked by bugs and mosquitoes the whole time. BUT she persevered. And now you may enjoy the fruits of all her hard labor. This was also right before the big storm. And it was a big storm actually. We didn’t lose power (although it did its best to flicker and threaten) and we did not flood (although that water was rising and pooling dangerously close to the top of our foundation), but it was windy and the sky was green and the rain poured down from every direction. We also had hail chips at one point. Not balls. These were shaped like small potato chips. Stevie said they looked like small icy flowers.  Because of course she kept running outside to make sure it was still “really” raining. She’s a free spirit. Dancing in the rain. She called it “temperature control”. I don’t know.

Anyway, I have some various pictures to put up later, but it’s a work day. Awww. Major sad face. So I have to shower blah blah and go. On a plus note, the village people (haha) are here laying the sod. It’s actually just one guy. And according to Stevie, he’s cute! So far it looks good. Nice and dark green without weeds in it. Apparently it has to be watered. A lot. I know the BF will be all over that this weekend, so that’s one less thing I have to. Also, more are storms a’ comin’ I hear. Free water!! I hope work is fast and quiet as I always do. I am off tomorrow and the weekend so I can really get some pictures and words up here. I mean, if you have to stay inside anyway, spend the time with me. You can’t go out or you’ll get electrocuted! We had real reports of lightening strikes and tornadoes last night so it’s best if you just curl up with the internet and call it an evening.

FYI follow up note: The sod guy was cute. Too bad I am in the invisible stage of my attractiveness/attention portion of life. Too old for the young hotties and too young for the old settlers. Although in this day and age I am too young all around. Those old guys are always going for the young ones too. Gotta go for real now. Time waits for no man. Plus the oven timer is beeping me off. Later.

Here’s That Rainbow I Was Talking About

June 8, 2013 at 12:46 pm (Day to Day, Picture Posts, Posts In Pictures, Rainbows, Weather) (, , , , , )

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

I brought out the big camera for that one. However, I did get my new phone. Very exciting. But, I have to go to work, so I will brag all about that later and show you my groundbreaking “first-picture-taken-with-the-best-phone-camera-ever-!!”, also later. Have a gorgeous day. It’s nice out because I have to go to work. If you are looking forward to a crappy, unseasonably cold, or rainy day, so you can stay indoors, anytime soon, just wait until Monday. It’s my day off so you can be sure that it will deliver all the bad weather you want! Later.
